manufacturing day

One of the most dynamic and eye-opening field trips at Tecumseh Public Schools is quickly becoming a student favorite, Project Lead The Way (PLTW) Manufacturing Day!

For eighth-grade students, career exploration isn’t just about dreaming; it’s about discovering real-world opportunities that could shape their futures. That’s why Tecumseh Middle School students had the unique opportunity to step inside the manufacturing world, witnessing cutting-edge innovation while exploring how these industries impact daily life.

During their field trip, students visited three key manufacturing sites in Lenawee County: Anderson Development Company, PlaneWave Instruments, and Ididit. These companies, located in Adrian and Tecumseh, are leaders in their respective fields, and they welcomed students with hands-on experiences that brought STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) learning to life.

The students participating in Eryn Stamper and Jon Way’s Project Lead The Way (PLTW) classes were immersed in an innovative, project-based learning environment to connect classroom lessons with real-world applications. This field trip perfectly complements that mission, giving students firsthand exposure to manufacturing, engineering, and technology careers.

Students were divided into two groups and rotated between locations to maximize their learning experience.

  • Anderson Development Company – A leader in specialty chemical manufacturing, ADC produces advanced materials for automotive coatings, adhesives, elastomers, and semiconductors. Students were fascinated to learn that the company’s products can be found in everyday items like skateboard wheels, aluminum car rims, and ATM rollers.

  • PlaneWave Instruments – This cutting-edge company designs and manufactures high-performance telescopes and mounts for astronomical research, astrophotography, and defense applications. Students got an in-depth look at the precision engineering behind these powerful instruments, which scientists and space enthusiasts worldwide use.

  • Ididit – With a long-standing reputation for excellence in the automotive industry, Ididit specializes in manufacturing steering columns and accessories for hot rod and muscle car enthusiasts. Students got a behind-the-scenes look at how these components are crafted, gaining a deeper appreciation for the design and engineering behind automotive innovation.

After an action-packed morning, students made a special stop at County National Bank, where representatives provided valuable insights into the importance of financial literacy. Wendy Pizana from County National Bank presented on financial literacy and banking safety, reinforcing the importance of responsible money management as a crucial life skill.

Following lunch, students were split into two groups once again. Half the students traveled to Ididit for an additional hands-on experience, while the other half remained at County National to hear from industry professionals. Jake Wright from Kreighoff Lenawee, Drew Schang from Brint Electric, and Richard Beech from Adrian Mechanical each spoke about their roles as project managers in their respective fields. They shared examples of their work, discussed the critical thinking required in their professions, and provided students with blueprints from real-world projects completed in and around Lenawee County. Students were even introduced to architectural rulers, allowing them to see firsthand how blueprints are drawn to specific scales.

Students observed mechanical, electrical, and robotic systems throughout the day, met engineers and technicians who make these industries thrive and gained inspiration for their career paths. This immersive experience aligned directly with Tecumseh Public Schools’ Strategic Plan, reinforcing the district’s commitment to providing students with real-world learning opportunities.
