sinking fund

Tecumseh Public Schools is seeking the community’s support for a vital initiative on the ballot this November: the approval of a 1.75 mill sinking fund millage. This balanced proposal addresses the district’s urgent infrastructure needs while considering the community’s financial capacity.

The proposed sinking fund will generate approximately $7.5 million over five years. The first project on the agenda is the much-needed repairs to the Tecumseh Community Memorial Pool building, estimated to cost around $2.5 million. These repairs will be carried out in phases to minimize disruption.

“The sinking fund is not just about the pool,” said Superintendent Matt Hilton. “It represents a crucial investment in our school district’s infrastructure, addressing necessary building and site projects that have been deferred far too long.”

The sinking fund will cover needed projects to repair, maintain, and improve aging TPS facilities. This includes new roofs for the four remaining buildings, new HVAC units, steam pipe replacements, network technology upgrades, and much more. The district has identified projects over the next several years, amounting to a projected cost of over $10 million, including the pool repairs. Even Tecumseh High School, which opened in 2001, is beginning to show signs of wear and requires attention.

“The approval of this sinking fund is essential for maintaining safe and functional facilities for our students, staff, and community,” added Superintendent Hilton. “It is a prudent and necessary step to ensure that our district can continue to provide a high-quality learning environment. Together, we are truly building tomorrow.”

Community support is crucial for the success of this initiative. Voting to approve this millage means investing in the future of our schools and community. TPS leaders are urging all community members to participate in the upcoming election and consider the significant positive impact of this fund on the district.

The district will host several informational meetings to help educate the public about this important millage. The first three will be held in the Media Center of Tecumseh High School:
