To enhance the ecological integrity of their surroundings, students at Tecumseh High School took matters into their own hands with a recent environmental initiative.
Teaming up with the Operations Department, the Environmental Club spearheaded an effort dubbed “Clean up the Creek” for Earth Day. Focusing their efforts on the creek and the vicinity of the M-50 entrance of THS, the group embarked on a mission to rid the area of litter and debris.
Together, students and staff from the Operations Department diligently collected a staggering nine bags of trash. Their concerted efforts beautified the landscape and served as a testament to the power of collective action in fostering positive change.
This initiative represents more than just a cleanup effort for the Environmental Club—it embodies their steadfast commitment to environmental stewardship. With a mission to raise awareness about pressing environmental issues and promote sustainable practices, the club strives to instill a sense of responsibility among its members and the broader school community.
Students loved the experience of cleaning up the area and expressed their enthusiasm.
“I really enjoyed getting together with friends and classmates to make a positive impact on our environment. I hope that more people will continue to show up and help out,” said junior Elizabeth Castorena.
Echoing this sentiment, Biology teacher and advisor of the Environmental Club Shelley Collins lauded the students’ dedication.
“The students worked really hard in an effort to make the environment around the school better,” said Ms. Collins. “I am impressed by their desire and work ethic to make a difference in the world.”
With a collaboration that hopes to be extended to future clean-ups with the Environmental Club, the Operations Department at Tecumseh Public Schools was ecstatic to help out.
“The Operations Department was happy to assist our students with this project,” said Joshua Mattison, TPS's Director of Operations. We are proud of the pride these students showed in caring for our campus environment."
