SOCIAL and EMOTIONAL LEARNING
What is Social and Emotional Learning?
Social and emotional learning (SEL), according to The Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning, is an integral part of education and human development. SEL is the process through which all young people and adults acquire and apply the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to develop healthy identities, manage emotions and achieve personal and collective goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain supportive relationships, and make responsible and caring decisions.
Self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision making are the social and emotional skills students will learn and develop as a result of our integration of social and emotional learning at TPS. As students practice and develop these skills they are able to: build self-confidence, develop empathy, solve problems, set goals, and build positive relationships.
Why is Social and Emotional Learning Important?
Our emotions and relationships affect how and what we learn and how we apply what we have learned in different settings. Positive emotions can help us inspire creativity and learning and sustain our engagement in exploring new ideas, but unmanaged stress and poor regulation of impulses interfere with attention and memory, and can contribute to behaviors disruptive to learning.
Benefits of Social and Emotional Learning:
Improves school culture and climate
Increases social and emotional skills
Helps establish and maintain positive relationships
Improved attitudes about self, others, and school
Teaches problem solving skills
Helps students set and meet goals
What does Social and Emotional Learning Look Like at Tecumseh Public Schools?
Tecumseh Public Schools is committed to creating a positive culture for adults and children. This environment is fostered through an understanding that social skills need to be taught and practiced just like academic skills. We are committed to providing opportunities for each and every student to develop at their pace and with the structures and support they need to be successful. In order to reinforce the development of social and emotional skills TPS has implemented a social and emotional learning curriculum, Suite 360, through Michigan Virtual.
Suite360 is a student curriculum that consists of a curated library of thousands of educational videos, articles, activities, surveys, and heuristics reflections. There's also lessons on topics critical to students’ social, emotional, and behavioral needs.
Suite360 offers parents information regarding strategies to support conversations you may have with your child on topics such as:
stress management
anxiety
depression
responsible decision-making
social awareness
Suite360 is research and evidence-backed, with content aligned to the standards developed by CASEL and mapped to the grade-specific learning objectives published by various federal and state education boards. The curriculum can be delivered in each of the learning modalities: face-to-face, hybrid, distance, or virtual.
Students can access Suite 360 through their Clever account. Parents and guardians can access Suite 360 in two ways:
