The Tecumseh High School Counselors strive to support students in academics, career, and social-emotional development so they achieve success in school and are prepared to lead rewarding lives as responsible members of society.  

Whether you need assistance with choosing your high school classes; making sure you are on track for graduation; planning for Enrollment (college, trade school, etc.), Enlistment (military), or Employment (career); or if you need social-emotional support, reach out to your counselor. We are here to help.

Course Selection Guide - 2022-2023

Course selection for the 2022-2023 school year is now underway! The deadline for course request submissions is March 8th.

ACADEMIC SUPPORT

  • Guide decision-making about course selection and scheduling, regarding career/post-secondary plans

  • Track student progress towards graduation and monitor academic progress

  • Facilitate peer and mentor tutoring for THS students

  • Support IEP process when appropriate

  • Oversee services given to students with 504 Plans

  • Coordinate and offer multi-tiered system of academic support

    • Tier one - Proactive large group/grade level coaching

    • Tier two - Small group lesson/group support

    • Tier three - Individual student support

CAREER SUPPORT

  • Assist students in developing a post-secondary plan, also known as an Educational Development Plan, that is required for all students, through multi-tiered system of career support

    • Tier one - Proactive large group/grade level coaching

    • Tier two - Small group lesson/group

    • Tier three - Individual student planning

  • Providing resources to students to engage in career exploration opportunities

  • Delivering career assessments aligned to the ASCA Mindsets & Behaviors that assist students in identifying personal characteristics that lead to potential career opportunities

  • Assist students in post-secondary research/planning to identify training/educational opportunities that lead to the necessary skills/certifications/licensure to pursue a career

  • Facilitating college representative visits, military exploration opportunities and financial aid workshops/assistance for students and parents, as well as organizing college/career fairs

SOCIAL/EMOTIONAL SUPPORT

  • Providing responsive services to meet the needs of students, including individual, group and crisis response counseling

  • Facilitate communication between students, parents and educators, mediating conflicts when necessary

  • Serve as an advocate to students through the life changes of adolescence

  • Assist students in developing positive relationships with peers and adults

  • Connecting students and families with community resources through referrals

  • Assisting students in developing healthy coping strategies for successful school and life transitions

MENTAL HEALTH

Mental health awareness is an important issue for all educators, who are often the first line of defense for their students. Education professionals have recognized the impact that a student's mental health has on learning and achievement, and they realize there's a great deal that can be done to help students with mental health issues.

ProMedica offers insight into mental health issues. A resource guide from the hospital is intended to help members of the community to better understand mental illness, the resources available for individuals and their families, and advocate for support and acceptance from the community.

The TPS counselors are available to connect students and families to resources and services within and outside of school. Examples include:

  • Peer Tutoring, School Social Worker

  • District-provided services through the consulting psychologist and psychiatric evaluations

  • Mental health providers, CMH and other private counseling agencies
