ASSESSMENTS

Our Assessment Vision

We align assessments directly to TPS learning outcomes and curriculum. We use learner assessment data consistently and effectively to understand and explain each learner’s progress, to provide a feedback loop to educators regarding learning strategies, and to help TPS educators and leaders to continuously improve student learning results.

Learning is monitored daily through the use of formative assessments in the classroom. To monitor learning growth and achievement throughout the year, the following assessment is also used:

  • NWEA MAP Growth is a computer adaptive test created by NWEA that learners take three times per school year. The results provide facilitators with the information needed to deliver appropriate content for each learner and determine each learner’s academic growth over time.

*A formative assessment is one of a variety of methods that facilitators use to evaluate subject-area comprehension, learning needs, and academic progress during a lesson, unit, or project. They help facilitators identify those concepts that a learner easily grasps, and the learning standards they have not yet met. This allows for flexibility in instruction for areas where additional academic support may be needed.

Michigan's Read by Grade Three Law

Being a good reader is critical for children to be successful in school. In 2016, the Michigan Legislature passed a law that requires schools to identify learners who are struggling with reading and writing and to provide additional help. The law states third graders may repeat third grade if they are more than one grade level behind beginning with the 2019-2020 school year.

The impact of this law began with the kindergarten class of 2017-2018. Tecumseh Public Schools educators immediately began a documented plan to assist these students and all of our early learners.

The Michigan Department of Education offers several resources about the Read by Grade Three Law. They are intended to help families understand the law so they can better support their children.
